Post transplant pregnancy
Jul 29, 2010 at 12:35 PM

So I was told that in my current state I would definately not last a pregnancy. I do want to have children some day and I am currently being evaluated for the transplant list. I was wondering if anyone knows about pregnancies post transplant. I know you cannot believe everything you read online, but I did read an article that studied 10 cf post lung transplant patients, and the patients ended up passing away by 3 years after giving birth. I am torn with this because I know that transplant doesn't guarantee you a long life afterwards and that does not include adding in the complications of a pregnancy. If there is any information that anyone can offer or any advice please respond.

I did a lot of research on this right after transplant. My doctors are dead set against it, as they have seen situations as you described. The results were often bad for mom and baby. That is just my center. I don't know of a center who would say "yes, go ahead." It was a very, very difficult decision for my husband and I, but 5 years ago, I got my tubes tied. We just didn't want to risk a pregnancy. What is so hard is that we want kids...but this just isn't the way. FOR US, that is. I hate to be a debbie downer, but it's my opinion, and the opinion of my doctors, that a pregnancy post transplant isn't a good idea. We plan to adopt one day...

It is still difficult for me. Do I ever regret getting my tubes tied? Not logically. Emotionally though? I go back and forth...ya know? I KNOW it's not a good idea...but it does not make the situation any easier. I did as much research I could pre-tubal and then (2005) were just very negative...it's hard...
